Frog Lily Pond Comforter

I had been wanting to create a little comfort blanket pattern for a while, and I realised that I had yet to do a frog (one of my favourite animals as it happens!), so it made sense to bring the two together into a new pattern. I thought having a frog sitting on a lily pad in the middle of a small pond would be a rather nice theme for a baby comfort blanket.

A green crochet frog sitting in the middle of a multicoloured granny square blanket meant to represent a lily pond. At the centre is a bright blue hexagon. Radiating out from that is a darker blue hexagon and then squares in blue, brown and green. The frog is sitting on a green lily pad and is surrounded by three lily pads sporting yellow-orange flowers.

Materials

  • Approximately 30-50g each of Blue, Pond Blue, Pond Green, Dirt Brown and Grass Green; oddments of Orange, White and Black
  • 4.5 mm and 3 mm crochet hooks
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Small amount of toy stuffing

Skill Level

Easy. You will need to be able to work sc, hdc and dc stitches, to increase and decrease and to change colours in the round.

Abbreviations

Please note that I am using US crochet terms throughout. I am actually British, but I find the US terms more intuitive. Measurements are metric.

sc – single crochet (UK = dc)

hdc – half double crochet (UK = htr)

dc – double crochet (UK=tr)

sl – slip stitch

ch – chain

mr – magic ring

st – stitch

inc – increase by 2 st (2 stitches into the same stitch from previous row)

dec – decrease over 2 st (1 stitch across 2 stitches from previous row)

start(x) – Either mr (x sc in mr) or ch2, x sc in 2nd chain from hook – whatever you like best [I am personally not a fan of mr and just stick to the ch2 method]

(x) – x = number of stitches at end of round

Y/O – Yarn Over

F/O – Fasten Off

Special Stitch – 5 dc Bobble

Y/O, insert hook through st, draw through 2 loops. Leave remaining loops on hook. Repeat 5 times. Y/O and draw through all of the remaining loops on hook. Ch 1.

Special Stitch – 3 dc Bobble

Y/O, insert hook through st, draw through 2 loops. Leave remaining loops on hook. Repeat 3 times. Y/O and draw through all of the remaining loops on hook. Ch 1.

Assembly

A closer view of the frog sitting on his lily pad. He has yellow orange feet in the same colour as the lilies and a broad smile
  1. Sew Flower into centres of Small Lily Pads
  2. Stuff Body and sew Back Feet onto bottom of Body (there will be some open space left).
  3. Sew the Front Feet onto the Body.
  4. Sew Body with Back Feet onto Big Lily Pad.
  5. Using Black, sew two pupils into the front of the Eyes (Frog pupils tend to be elongated like cat’s eyes, but it’s up to you if you want to make them round instead)
  6. Stuff back of Eyes and sew the front of the Eyes to the back, ensuring that there is a green rim around the white front parts.
  7. Sew the Eyes on to the top of the Head
  8. Using Black, sew a happy mouth onto the Head. Frogs have very wide mouths.
  9. Sew Head onto Body. You can use the tail from the bottom of the Head to pull through both the Body and bottom of the Big Lily Pad.
  10. Sew the Big Lily Pad roughly into the centre of the Blanket and the two Small Lily Pads where you would like them in the middle area of the pond.
